Legislation states that every occupant in the workplace must be provided with health and safety information related to fires. Therefore, fire safety signs and fire equipment signs are required after carrying out a fire risk assessment, to determine where to find the fire fighting equipment and emergency exits.
When it comes to what fire signage is required, there are two parts of legislation to be aware of: Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 (HSR) and the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 (RRFSO).
The RRFSO requires all companies to appoint one ‘responsible person’, who will be held accountable for meeting all fire safety regulations. They must provide specific safety signs and signals – installing fire alarms and equipment on the business premises wherever necessary.
According to international standards, there are 5 categories of fire signage: prohibition signs, warning signs, mandatory signage, emergency exit signs/escape routes (directional arrows) and fire equipment signs.
Fire safety signs and categories of fire signage are colour coded in order to make them quick and easy to recognise in the event of a fire.
Prohibition Signs
Prohibition signs prohibit actions from staff and visitors, which would be detrimental to health and safety.
A warning sign is YELLOW: which signifies a potential hazard (e.g. fire hazards), obstacle, or element requiring special attention and care.
Fire point signs are RED: and designed to highlight the location of fire-fighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers and fire hoses, as well as the nearest fire alarm. The fire assembly point should be easily accessible to all!
BLUE fire safety signs (mandatory signs): indicate actions to be carried out by guests and employees to comply w ith statutory requirements. Specific fire risks can be minimised by following safety signs instructions.
